How to Get Rid of Mice in Your Missoula Attic

Scratching sounds above your ceiling at night. Droppings along attic joists. Insulation that looks shredded and disturbed. If any of this sounds familiar, mice have moved into your Missoula attic, and they’re not leaving on their own.

Attic infestations are the most common call we receive from Missoula homeowners, especially between October and February, when Clark Fork Valley temperatures drive deer mice and house mice out of the cold and into the nearest warm structure they can find. Here’s exactly what to do about it.

Confirm It’s Actually Mice

Before doing anything else, confirm what you’re dealing with. Mice and rats require different approaches, and misidentifying the problem leads to wasted time and money.

Signs of mice in your attic:

  1. Small droppings (3–6 mm), dark, and pointed at both ends
  2. Shredded insulation used for nesting, typically in corners or along beams
  3. Light scratching or scurrying sounds, usually at night
  4. Gnaw marks on wood, wiring, or stored items
  5. A faint ammonia-like smell from concentrated urine

If droppings are larger (10–20 mm) and blunt-ended, you may have Norway rats, a different problem requiring a different strategy.

Do Not Disturb Droppings Without Protection

use dust mask disposable gloves eyewear

This step matters more in Missoula than almost anywhere else. Deer mice, the most common attic invader in western Montana, are a known carrier of hantavirus. Dry droppings, when disturbed, release particles into the air that can cause serious respiratory illness.

Before entering your attic:

  1. Wear an N95 or P100 respirator, not a dust mask
  2. Use disposable gloves
  3. Ventilate the attic space before entering
  4. Never sweep or vacuum dry droppings with a standard vacuum

If the infestation is significant, call a professional before entering the attic at all.

Set Snap Traps Along Active Runways

Once you’ve confirmed mouse activity and taken safety precautions, snap traps are the most effective and humane mechanical removal method. Place them perpendicular to walls and beams, mice travel along edges, not through open spaces.

Where to place traps in a Missoula attic:

  1. Along joists and rafters where droppings are concentrated
  2. Near nesting material
  3. Around pipe penetrations and vent openings
  4. In corners where two walls meet

Use unscented bait, peanut butter or a small piece of nesting material, which works well. Check traps every 24–48 hours. Do not use poison bait stations in attics. A poisoned mouse that dies inside a wall cavity creates a severe odour problem and poses secondary poisoning risks to Missoula’s local raptor population.

Find and Seal Every Entry Point

Traps catch mice already inside. They do nothing to stop the next wave. In Missoula, where freeze-thaw cycles physically open new gaps in your home’s structure every winter, entry point sealing is the only permanent solution.

Common attic entry points in Missoula homes:

  1. Soffit and fascia gaps, especially after snow load or ice damage
  2. Roof vent covers that have cracked or shifted
  3. Gaps where the roofline meets the top of exterior walls
  4. Pipe and electrical penetrations through the roof deck
  5. Chimney gaps and uncapped flues

Seal every opening larger than ¼ inch using stainless hardware cloth or metal flashing. Do not use foam as a primary barrier, it compresses, cracks, and pulls away from wood under Montana’s temperature swings, reopening the same gap within one or two seasons.

Sanitise and Restore the Attic

After removal is confirmed, with no new droppings and no fresh trap activity for 7–10 days, the attic needs to be properly sanitised before the job is done.

  1. HEPA vacuum all droppings and nesting material
  2. Apply enzyme-based deodoriser to eliminate residual scent trails
  3. Inspect and replace any insulation that has been heavily contaminated or compressed by nesting activity

Skipping sanitation is one of the most common DIY mistakes. Active scent trails inside your attic guide new rodents back to the same nesting areas even after the original infestation has been cleared.

When DIY Isn’t Enough

If you’ve set traps and keep catching mice with no end in sight, if you find extensive nesting or insulation damage, or if you can’t safely access your attic to locate entry points, it’s time to call a professional.
